Trump suddenly hits Canada with 50% tariffs, without a word of warning to Carney at World Cup final

Trump’s proclamations argue that Canada discriminates against American autos, alcohol, and cheese relative to other trading partners

WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump on Monday, July 20, imposed 50% tariffs on most Canadian goods, declaring that Ottawa has unfairly discriminated against American autos, alcohol, and dairy products.

The move could unleash a new wave of economic disruption, raising the risk of higher inflation and further straining relations between two nations that had been closely integrated economically before Trump’s return to the White House.

An administration official previewing the action, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Canada was one of the only countries besides China to retaliate against Trump’s earlier tariffs and needed to be held accountable.
